Exactly, since the chance you lose anything great is smaller than I assumed I guess anet could better spend there time on making GW2 great instead of updating the old drop system.

U did the right thing one should do with every gold item that has Highly Salvagable on it- U salvaged it for mats. This way U got ~800gp instead of ~250gp.
Tyrian magmas shields (without inscription slots) are valuable ONLY if they are dual-modded (assuming these mods are perfect or almost perf).
